How to convert MP3 to WAV

  1. Add MP3 files. Drop one or more MP3s into the box above.
  2. Pick a bit depth. 16-bit (CD quality) works with almost everything. Choose 24-bit or 32-bit float if you'll process the audio further in a DAW.
  3. Convert. Press Convert to WAV.
  4. Download. Save each WAV, or download them all as a ZIP.

When do you need WAV instead of MP3?

WAV is an uncompressed format: every sample is stored as-is, so there's no decoding step and no further quality loss when the file is edited and saved again. It's the format many tools expect:

  • Audio and video editors such as Audacity, Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, Pro Tools and Logic handle WAV most reliably.
  • DJ equipment and samplers: some CDJs, hardware samplers and drum machines only accept WAV.
  • Audio CDs: CD burning software uses 16-bit, 44.1 kHz WAV.
  • Speech recognition and phone systems: many transcription services and IVR/telephony systems require WAV input.

Does converting MP3 to WAV improve quality?

No. MP3 is a lossy format, so the detail removed when the MP3 was created can't be restored. A WAV made from an MP3 sounds identical to the MP3. What you gain is compatibility, and protection from further quality loss when you edit and re-save. Expect WAV files to be about 10 times larger: roughly 10 MB per minute of stereo audio at 16-bit.

16-bit, 24-bit or 32-bit float?

16-bit is CD quality and the most compatible. 24-bit is the standard in music production. 32-bit float can store levels above 0 dB without clipping, which is useful for intermediate files in a mixing workflow. Because the source is an MP3, 16-bit already captures everything the file contains.

Frequently asked questions

What sample rate is the WAV file?

44.1 kHz, the standard rate for music and audio CDs, and the rate most MP3s use.

Why is the WAV file so much bigger?

WAV stores audio without compression, while MP3 compresses it by about 10 times. The larger size is expected.

Is my audio uploaded?

No. Conversion happens in your browser, so your files never leave your device.
