How to cut an audio file

1. Open your file. Drop in any audio file, or the audio from an MP4 or MOV video.
2. Select a part. Drag across the waveform to select, then drag the orange handles to fine-tune. For frame-accurate cuts, type exact times into the Start and End boxes.
3. Preview. Press play (or the Space bar) to hear your selection before you cut.
4. Keep or remove. Choose Keep selection to save just that part, or Remove selection to delete it and join the remaining audio.
5. Download. Add a fade in or fade out if you like, choose MP3 or WAV, and press Cut audio.

Two ways to cut

Keep selection: make clips and ringtones

This extracts just the section you selected, like the chorus of a song, a quote from an interview or a sound effect from a longer recording. Add a short fade in and fade out so the clip starts and ends smoothly instead of abruptly. Ringtones are typically 20–30 seconds long. Save them as MP3 for Android, or convert them to M4R in iTunes or GarageBand for iPhone.

Remove selection: delete mistakes

This removes the selected section and joins the audio on either side. Use it to cut out a cough, a long pause, an advert or a flubbed line. The Smooth the join setting adds a short crossfade (30 ms by default) where the two parts meet, so you won't hear a click at the edit point.

Tips for clean cuts

• Cut in quiet moments. Edits placed in natural pauses, or just before a beat, are almost impossible to hear.
• Use the time boxes for precision. Times can be typed as 1:23.45 (minutes:seconds) or just seconds, such as 83.45.
• Keep quality high. If you'll edit the result again, save as WAV to avoid losing quality with each MP3 re-encode.
